Class 3 DSC Explained: Why It's the Only DSC You Need

Understand what a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate is, why older DSC classes were discontinued, and where Class 3 DSCs are used across Indian government portals.

The End of Class 1 & Class 2 DSCs

Digital Signature Certificates in India were historically issued in three classes based on the level of identity verification performed. Following updated CCA (Controller of Certifying Authorities) guidelines, Class 1 and Class 2 certificates have been discontinued, and Class 3 is now the single standard issued to all applicants.

What Makes Class 3 Different

Class 3 DSCs require the highest level of identity verification, including mandatory Video KYC, before issuance. This ensures a higher assurance level suitable for high-value transactions such as company incorporation, tender bidding and large financial filings.

Where Class 3 DSC Is Used

Class 3 certificates are used across MCA V3 for company/LLP filings, the GST portal for registration and returns, the Income Tax e-filing portal, DGFT for import-export documentation, e-Procurement and GeM portals for tenders, and various court e-filing systems.

Individual vs Organisation Class 3 DSC

An individual Class 3 DSC is issued in a person's own name and used for personal filings or as an authorised signatory. An organisation DSC additionally embeds the entity's name and requires supporting incorporation documents and an authorisation letter.

How to Apply

Applying is straightforward: share your PAN, Aadhaar and photograph, complete Video KYC, and receive your Class 3 DSC on a FIPS-compliant USB token — typically within a few hours through DSC Suvidha Kendra.
